Our PinBoard Pinterest Clone Redesign Plus a Mobile App!

Howdy folks! It's burning up here on the East Coast with 103-105 degree temperatures over the next few days (local weather says it feels like 109 degrees outside right now!). To celebrate the hot weather (lol. kidding), we're creating some "hot" new things for our PinBoard Pinterest clone. We are working on the next set of updates for the PinBoard theme that'll include a new design as well as a mobile app for the theme.

We have a sneak peek at the new design below. Let us know your thoughts in the comments!

With Dropdown Nav...

PinBoard Pinterest clone - version 2

Multiple Color Schemes

PinBoard Pinterest clone color schemes

PinBoard User Profile Page

PinBoard Profile Page

Our current plan is to charge a nominal fee to current PinBoard theme buyers if they want to use this new theme - something like $25 or so for the theme package. We're still deciding any added costs though. PinBoard version 2 will include it's own separate theme folder and will not be interchangeable with the current PinBoard theme design. After the new design is completed all new PinBoard theme buyers will have this theme option within the new theme package downloaded. There will be no extra charge for the new design. We'll update on it's progress in the comments below.

We're Making a Mobile App for PinBoard

We'll also be updating this blog post once we're further ahead with the development of a new iOS and Andriod app for PinBoard. But, for now, I wanted to post a few quick notes on this exciting new app development for PinBoard.

We are going to make a Drupal phonegap app that allows full drupal web site content management. Something similar to these two posts discussing mobile mobile HTML5 and Android Apps: Building a jQuery Mobile HTML5 App with Phonegap for Drupal-7 and Android App with Drupal 7 Services Phonegap and jQuery Mobile. Both provide integration with native mobile apps and the Drupal website API. We hope to have this wrapped up in a few weeks and this will allow for a full mobile PinBoard app for PinBoard customers.

More to come... :)

Hi there , it looks very nice, however , does script allow users to share mottos, quotes, sentences, posting messages etc......
So if users want to post text , poems and so on, does your script have that option?
Thank you

We are just in the finalization stages of design. There are still a few kinks to be worked out there. Then, we go to porting it to our mobile framework and integration with PinBoard.

So, probably at least 2-3 weeks considering the holiday this week (4th of July vacations).

Thanks

The theme looks great and attractive. Do you have any tentative date when you are planning to release this theme. Can you please let us know if there are any new features that you are planning to include in the new release...

ThemeSnap's picture

We are working on several new features but haven't formalized them yet. I promise we'll add them to the roadmap document once we are closer to getting PinBoard 2 released!

I like the new theme. Shouldn't you give the early adaptors the theme for free because they did a lot of testing and suggestions on improving it?

ThemeSnap's picture
Jul 02, 2012 By ThemeSnap

We are still considering what price, if any, we'll charge for the release to existing customers of PinBoard. I know we'll need to write documentation and provide instructions on integrating it. So, we were hoping we could support the integration of it into existing PinBoard themes from customers. A little extra $$, even if it's $20-$30 would go a long way to support us helping existing customers get it integrated correctly.

We'll see what we can come up with and update everyone once we decide.

Thanks for the input.

Any plans for a Drupal7 Commerce variant of Pinboard?

ThemeSnap's picture
Jul 04, 2012 By ThemeSnap

We don't have any information on this or a clear idea f how it might work. So, probably not in this next release. I don't know that may buyers have even expressed any interest in a shopping/commerce feature for our Pinterest clone.

Can you give an example or two?

Thanks

Hello,

This theme would be perfect if it had an Add a Pin feature similar to the one on Pinterest, where the user can paste a URL into the box, click the Find Images button, and then is able to scroll through and choose from one of the available images. This feature is badly needed.

Thanks!

ThemeSnap's picture
Jul 04, 2012 By ThemeSnap

Hi,
If you want to post this as a feature request in the forums we'll review it there:

http://support.themesnap.com/forums/20731413-pinboard-theme

This may be possible but we'd need to likely add onto or build new functionality within the JS and other pinning functions to find images on the pages.

Great Theme. I love the move away from looking "exactly" like Pinterest while keeping the functionality.

Cannot wait for this one...

Hi,
We wanted to add our own color scheme and make this theme really stand out. We're confident this will be a great selling theme and solution for anyone looking for a "Pinterest-like" solution.

Should be available in a few weeks.

Thanks again!

Hey jason,
Are there any plans to pin videos from other sites too. Also,if a site has YouTube videos embedded, I think the user should be able to pin those videos too which is a good option to add.

ThemeSnap's picture
Jul 09, 2012 By ThemeSnap

Hi,
We improved the pinning of videos in a recent release. You can read more about releases here: http://support.themesnap.com/entries/21275572-pinboard-roadmap-information

See: PinBoard v1.0.5

We'll continually improve this functionality as long as people still like and use our products :)

Thanks

I was trying to pin videos from other sites, but I could only get the thumbnails of those videos in Theme demo

ThemeSnap's picture
Jul 10, 2012 By ThemeSnap

It really depends on the website in question, how they have embedded or are using YouTube videos on their sites (code used for embedding), and they could also have JS or other code conflicting with the Pin It button code that detects the video or thumbnails on the page.

Count of pins for each board is good feature to add

ThemeSnap's picture
Jul 09, 2012 By ThemeSnap

We'll consider this for the next release or its first update. If you want to add the request to our PInBoard forums that would also be fine: http://support.themesnap.com/entries/21275572-pinboard-roadmap-information

Thanks!

If an option to change the naming convention like
Boards, pin it, Repin, pinned to something else however the theme buyer wants to change is included, I personally think will be a very good attractive feature to buy this theme.
Eg: 1) Pin it Button can be changed to paste it button.
2) Create Board can be changed to Create Wall.
3) Repin can be changed Repaste.
4) Pinned onto the Board can be changed to Pasted onto the Wall.
5) Pinned onto the category can be changed to Pasted onto to the Category etc...

If the option cannot be given on Drupal Admin interface, any documentation of how to change those names with the theme package will be very helpful.

Aug 07, 2012 By ThemeSnap

Hi,
You can change most of this in this file since v1.1.3:

/sites/all/modules/pinboard_helper/pinboard_helper.define.inc

Almost all of the defined variables within the PinBoard Pinterest clone theme can be changed here now.

Will the mobile apps be included in the pricing for the new theme or as extra modules? If extra then what would the cost be?

Also will you have amazon S3 capability to serve pictures and videos? This seems to be a popular feature on other scripts to help with the hosting loading costs.

Thanks,

Reuben.

ThemeSnap's picture
Aug 07, 2012 By ThemeSnap

Hi, For all previous buyers we will provide the mobile app code. However, we will not be able to act as a support channel for all types of app or app management related questions. We'll be writing more about it once we have the app fully tested. Amazon S3 should have no issues if you want to integrate PinBoard with that service. We have not done this ourselves using Amazon S3 yet.

But many Drupal projects use Amazon S3 for hosting and our Drupal video theme, GoVideo, uses the Video module and you can easily tie into Amazon S3 using the video module now.

Hi there,
Why not include any monetisation and Ad manager module ?
Thanks
AJ

ThemeSnap's picture
Aug 07, 2012 By ThemeSnap

We are adding more advertising up the few upcoming versions. On the pin page you can place right column ads and you can always use the provided "block" under the Pin image on the Pin preview page to display Google Adsense or whatever ad network you'd like. There are one or two modules that allow Google and other ads within native Drupal blocks -- all easy to do in PinBoard and most other Drupal themes.

Thanks

Can you share in advance what new feature will be included in this release. I know a new theme and app but what else. I would also love to know if you would consider an ecommerce spin on the theme. Would it be possible to have stores sign up to the site. Then if a user posts a pic from the store which would drive a sale, the user who posted and the site would earn commission. Just a cool idea I think on how these themes could make more money.

ThemeSnap's picture
Aug 07, 2012 By ThemeSnap

Hi,
We've been asked a couple of times about adding ecommerce to PinBoard. While we have no plans for it in the next release, we will definitely keep it in mind.

The issue is that everyone will want something different, and to use for different purposes. So, we need to keep this in mind while developing newer features in the PinBoard Pinterest clone solution.

New features can be tracked by going here:

will the page scroll also be fluid as well. Not pausing to load until the bottom of the page?

ThemeSnap's picture

On the current theme the page waiting time at the bottom is typical for loading images on many sites nowadays. We may tweak a couple of things with this or other related features of loading pages though.

reuben's picture

You guys must be busy and I know this is not an easy thing to code and especially with the new app updates for Android and iOS. But it would be good to know when the theme and apps will be ready for launch, also if you need beta customers then let me know and I am willing to sign up and test. I really want to use the new theme and I am excited about the app inclusion as this is exactly when I need for the target market for my site. A full 'new' featured list would also be great to see what is new and different. Let me know if you need beta users and I can install and start using on my server.

Thanks.

Aug 07, 2012 By ThemeSnap

Hi all,
Thanks for all the comments. Replying back to customers keeps me busy... but glad to have all the support for PinBoard!

We are about 90% done with the app and the theming is going smoothly. We are not taking on hardly any external projects at this time so that we can complete a few things -- like PinBoard, the new Q&A theme, and several new projects/themes.

My lead programmer tells me next week, the week of 8-13 it should be completed. Fingers crossed!

Thanks everyone.

Thanks!

Any updates on pinboard 2.0?

Thanks

MC's picture
Aug 08, 2012 By MC (not verified)

hey Jason:

Thanks for the update.

I know people are asking for a lot of added features but in my personal opinion, doing what Pinterest does (pinning images & videos, organizing them into personal boards, browsing & discovering, user profiles and comments) and providing a GREAT user experience by paying attention to the little design & UI details are what's important.

I hope you can really go over the user experience and interaction flow carefully and make those as pleasant as possible.

Just as an example, with the current demo to me feels quite "clunky" and not as impressive from a design/UI stand-point as the original Pinterest.

I hope this new theme update will change that.

Thanks.

-add more video supports. example: vimeo

-add an add placement right below the main catagory bar like a banner.

-when a user clicks on a image or video on the main page, it should not leave the main page. it sucks having to click an image or video and leave the main page and then when you are done viewing the image or video you viewed, you have to go back in your browser. its silly.

-comments on pins should be collapsed. maybe show the first 5-10 comments and then if you want to view the next 50 comments you can click the "see 50 comments" or "see all comments" comments take up a huge section.

just some suggestions from a future customer

-also, when a user pins something, is it posted to facebook?

JOE's picture
Aug 11, 2012 By JOE (not verified)

also, what about giving the admin the option of how they want the site viewed? lets say you mix the pinboard 2 with the latest pinboard version, and the admin can pick how they want the pins aligned?

example: you now have the pins in more of a scattered format. the new version seems to have pins more aligned. lets have the admin be able to choose what they like.

Hi all,
PinBoard 2 is now released. We are working hard on getting some images, documentation, and adding to the theme description page updated today.

For new orders, you can simply purchase the theme now if you'd like, using the Buy Now link on the theme page: http://www.themesnap.com/premium-drupal-themes/pinboard.html

We will likely be making tweaks this week for any initial updates or changes as they are reported with PinBoard v2. I'll also be updating some app documentation to outline the mobile part of PinBoard v2.

Existing users will be able to update their existing PinBoard theme (if they want to) with the changelog instructions we'll be sending along today.
